Background of the study :
In recent years, the incorporation of vocational training into primary school curricula has been explored as a means to foster early skill development and practical learning among young learners. In Sardauna Local Government Area, Taraba State, innovative educational initiatives have sought to bridge the gap between traditional academic subjects and hands-on vocational skills. Early exposure to practical skills is believed to cultivate creativity, enhance problem-solving abilities, and lay the foundation for future technical proficiency. Recent studies (Obi, 2023; Ekwueme, 2024) indicate that integrating vocational training into primary education can have profound long-term benefits on students’ cognitive development and overall adaptability. In Sardauna, pilot programs have introduced basic vocational modules that cover areas such as woodworking, simple electronics, and creative arts, providing children with opportunities to engage in experiential learning. This early exposure to practical activities not only diversifies the learning experience but also equips students with valuable life skills that transcend traditional academic boundaries. The programs are designed to be age-appropriate, ensuring that the tasks are both engaging and educational, thereby promoting a balanced development of both academic and vocational abilities. Additionally, these initiatives aim to create an inclusive learning environment where creativity and innovation are encouraged from a young age. The involvement of local community members and artisans in delivering these programs further strengthens the connection between school-based learning and real-world applications. The integration of vocational training in primary schools is seen as a proactive measure to address future skill shortages and prepare a generation that is well-equipped for the demands of a rapidly evolving job market (Ike, 2025). As primary education becomes more diversified through vocational modules, it is anticipated that students will develop a broader skill set, enhanced critical thinking, and a stronger capacity for practical problem solving, laying a robust foundation for lifelong learning and adaptability.
Statement of the problem :
Despite the promising potential of integrating vocational training into primary education, primary schools in Sardauna Local Government Area continue to face several challenges in implementing these programs effectively. One of the major issues is the lack of adequately trained instructors who can deliver vocational content in a manner that is both engaging and developmentally appropriate. In many instances, teachers are not sufficiently equipped with the technical expertise required to integrate vocational skills into the standard curriculum (Udo, 2023). Moreover, the scarcity of proper facilities and modern teaching aids significantly hampers the delivery of effective vocational training at the primary level. This inadequacy leads to a situation where the potential benefits of early skill development are not fully realized, resulting in a gap between the intended outcomes of such programs and actual student performance. Additionally, there is often a disconnect between the curricular goals of vocational training and the traditional academic focus, which can lead to resistance from stakeholders who are accustomed to conventional teaching methods. The limited financial and infrastructural resources further exacerbate these challenges, thereby restricting the scalability and sustainability of these initiatives. Consequently, despite initial positive outcomes in pilot programs, the overall implementation and impact of vocational training in primary schools remain uncertain. This study seeks to explore the underlying factors contributing to these challenges and to propose viable solutions that can enhance the effectiveness and integration of vocational training in primary education. By examining current practices and identifying gaps, the research aims to offer evidence-based recommendations that could lead to a more effective and holistic educational model in Sardauna.
Objectives of the study:
To assess the impact of vocational training on skill development in primary schools.
To identify challenges in the implementation of vocational training at the primary level.
To recommend strategies for effective integration of vocational modules in the primary curriculum.
